Seven days is a good length for a first trip if you focus on one part of the country. This route uses Marrakech as its base and adds the most requested experience for first-time visitors: a night in the Sahara dunes.

Driving time from Marrakech to Merzouga totals about 9 to 10 hours without stops, which is why the route splits it over two days: roughly 4 hours to Ouarzazate over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, then about 2 hours to the Dades Valley, and 4 to 5 hours on to the dunes via the Todra Gorge. Road works and weather on the pass can add time, so start early.

Days 1–2: Marrakech

Arrive, check into your riad and keep the first afternoon light. A gentle walk through the medina towards Jemaa el-Fna at dusk is the best introduction to the city. On day two, visit the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the souks in the morning, rest at midday and spend the late afternoon in a garden or on a rooftop.

Day 3: Over the High Atlas

Leave early and cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, one of the most dramatic roads in Morocco. Stop at the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before continuing towards the Dades Valley and its kasbahs.

Day 4: Into the dunes

Visit the Todra Gorge in the morning, then drive on to the edge of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Most camps arrange a camel ride or a 4x4 transfer into the dunes in time for sunset. Dinner and the night are spent at camp.

Days 5–6: Back west

Wake early for sunrise, the quietest moment in the desert. The return journey is long, so most itineraries break it with a night in the Dades Valley or near Ouarzazate before crossing back to Marrakech.

Day 7: A slow final morning

Keep your last day flexible: a hammam, a cooking class or a final walk through the souks for anything you saw earlier in the week.

A slower alternative without the desert

  • Days 1–3: Marrakech, with a day trip to the Ourika Valley or Imlil in the High Atlas.
  • Days 4–5: Essaouira, for the ramparts, fishing port and Atlantic breeze.
  • Days 6–7: a night in the Atlas foothills or the Agafay area, then back to Marrakech.
