Packing for Morocco comes down to two principles: dress in layers, because temperatures swing between day and night, and choose clothing that is comfortable in conservative settings.
Clothing
- Light, breathable trousers, long skirts or dresses that cover the knees.
- Tops that cover the shoulders; a light scarf is useful for sun, dust and visiting religious sites.
- A warm layer such as a fleece or light down jacket, even in spring and autumn, for desert and mountain nights.
- Comfortable walking shoes with good grip; medina lanes can be uneven and slippery.
- Sandals or slip-on shoes for riads and hammams.
- Swimwear for riad pools and the coast; cover up away from the beach.
For the desert
- A head scarf or wide-brimmed hat and good sunglasses.
- A warm layer and socks for the night; desert temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
- A small torch or headlamp.
- Lip balm, sunscreen and moisturiser for dry air.
For the mountains
- Hiking shoes or boots if you plan to trek.
- Rain jacket outside summer.
- Proper cold-weather gear in winter, when snow is common at altitude.
Documents, money and tech
- Passport in good condition with enough validity: at least three months beyond arrival for UK travellers and six months for US travellers, with a blank page for stamps. Check the rule for your own nationality, and store copies separately.
- Travel insurance details.
- Two payment cards from different banks, and some cash for arrival.
- Universal adapter: Morocco uses type C and E plugs at 220 V.
- Offline maps downloaded before you arrive.
- A small power bank for long travel days.
Health and comfort
- Personal medication in original packaging, with a copy of prescriptions.
- Hand sanitiser and tissues.
- A basic first-aid kit with rehydration salts.
- Earplugs for lively medinas and early calls to prayer.
