Essaouira
A fortified Atlantic port of whitewashed lanes, blue boats and steady sea winds.
Overview
Last reviewed 13 October 2026
Built in its current form in the eighteenth century under Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, Essaouira, historically known as Mogador, is a planned port city whose medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ramparts face the Atlantic, and its working fishing port remains the heart of daily life.
After the intensity of Marrakech, Essaouira feels calm. The medina is easy to navigate, the light is soft and the trade winds keep temperatures mild, which also makes it a centre for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

A long, wide beach to the south of town, popular for walks, surfing and kitesurfing.
Getting there and around
Schedules change. Confirm times and fares with operators before travelling.
Essaouira has no railway. CTM and Supratours buses connect it with Marrakech and Agadir; private transfers are also common.
Essaouira-Mogador Airport has direct flights from cities including Paris, Brussels-Charleroi, London-Stansted, Madrid and Marseille, plus a domestic link to Rabat. Several routes run only in certain seasons, so check airline schedules for your dates.
The medina is pedestrianised. Porters with carts wait near the main gates to help with luggage.
